Week 10

 Task

Blog- Participants in the course (Audience) will share their reflections on what they did and what they learned throughout the course and comment on another person's post (Behavior) in at least one post on their own blog and one comment (Degree).

In these 10 weeks, my knowledge of using technology tools has developed by leaps and bounds.
Thank you, Donna. Weekly, you make us read and comments on the reading lists, the compulsory discussion, tasks to be completed for each week, charting my reflective thoughts on my blog and comment on another course mate's bog, bookmarking the sites using Delicious.com, lists of technology tools for us to test out and experimenting is quite amazing and eye-opener to me.
Though I was struggling with workload, family commitment, and this 100 per cent online course.
Donna, you are always so encouraging, understanding and positive. I appreciate that you always sent us timely reminder , checklist, rubrics to let us know what is expected of us. Grades are given promptly to let us know when we stand and this helps me to improve myself  in the near future.

I always like the idea to read other course mate's work and blog. It provides  feedback and bench marking my work with others and it spurs us a healthy competition and sharing and caring spirit.
I notices that some experts in certain field are helping out the not so experienced one in making the new technology tool works, for example in designing a Webquest, blog and hyperlink interactive PowerPoint.

This week reading lists is a kind of self-evaluation in integrating technology tools as to where am I as a teacher in using technology  tools in classroom situation and virtual learning .Indeed,  I have progressed in technology integration from the entry level(worksheet types in Microsoft Words and lecture notes in static PowerPoint) , adoption level (games based interactive PowerPoint ) to adaptation level( answering online grammar exercise), infusion level (use of online dictionary, graphic organizers , word map or mind map to talk characters and storyline in a novel)and transformation level (write a storyboard using technology tools such as cartoon generator, comic strips.  PowerPoint arts gallery).  I hope that one day my students will progress to develop a blog to reflect on their own learning process.

As for the the roles of technology tools in engaging students, I can say that it is moving on to active participation from passive participants and non-active participants. Only handfuls students are active participants and the same students are using technology tools as  active, collaborative, constructive, authentic, goal oriented participants in finding information online to write a debate speech as a team in district debate competition.

I will persist and continue to implement and integrate more technology tools in conducive learning environment. I am now getting my students work in groups of five in developing a storyboard.

Week 9

Time flies and we are coming to the end of the course.

As I am trying to recall many things I have learned, and I tried to implement new technology tools in classroom situation and in the virtual world. It is not easy and it takes time to reflect and write the final report and at the same time read more and discover more things.

The end has come and yet it seems that it is beginning of something new. Over the weekend, I attended Teachers Christian Conference 2013 in Cameron Highland, Malaysia. In one of the hobby session, I discovered some new application in mobile technology. Again , it opens up my horizon to new things as we are discussing about online learning, there are talks about using Ipad to engage 21st century learners. They are advancing in using mobile learning, using new free application in Ipad such as popplet, showme  /educreations, flashcardlet, Khan academy, poll everywhere, todaysmeet, twitter, facebook, evernote and the list goes on.

Back to our assignment, I have implemented the new technology in the weaker class. I am waiting and hoping that my students will be able to catch up with their studies. It amazes me the importance to read the articles posted online for our reading. Due to my ignorance and busyness, I was lost in the platform provided in the reading assignment. As this week was a school break, I am able to catch up with my reading and at the same time marking of examination papers.

Just a while ago, I actually sent some messages to my students from the better class to attempt the questions I posted in the blog. I am still waiting for their reply. I am not sure whether my students are ready for the new technology or not.

The first week reading assignment about Weblogs for use with ESL classes by Campbell enlightens me the purpose of the blog. This year, I was assigned to help my colleague to update the school blog with latest news.It never dawned upon me to use blog to teach and as a  referencing tool for students. Woe to us, teachers, who are still making our students to copy notes by hands. I feel so guilty about that where my students should be exploring and discovering themselves the vast information out there.

In my country, the public school is still quite backward , they are debating not to allow students to bring mobile to school for it brings more harm to students, forgetting mobile learning is getting popular worldwide.

Week 8

It is rather challenging week. Quite a lot of things to do and meeting deadlines

Project Task
Please write your draft Project Report or your draft Project Plan. Add your draft report or plan to your Partner Page on the wiki.

Read you partner's draft project or plan. Using the Project Report Checklist or the Project Plan Checklist, give your partner feedback. Add the checklist to your Partner Page on the wiki.

Add some general comments to your partner on the Partner Page on the wiki.

My reflection:
It is important to plan early so that I have time implement the new technology tools with the students.  I managed to try two technology with my students in 70 minutes English lesson. It takes a lot of time to put the steps in the format given. by answering these questions cause me to think and evaluate the technology tools I have implemented in class. As I am using it without an obsever, it is difficult for me to monitor the actual learning that was taken place.

Week 8: Task – Create an Online Exercise/Technology Tool
Create something to use with your students.
I have tried using flash cards

Upload your creation or add it's URL (if it's a website or online tool) to the wiki page called "Week 8 Resources."
I actually have linked into the blog for he student to make reference easily after class time

  Week 8: Discussion – Online Exercises/Technology Tools

[

After exploring some of the different tools and exercises for this week, share your ideas about how using these might change the way you teach and/or the way that your students learn.
I have used Blog as a platform for the learning through the technology tools to happen. I do not want my students get lost in looking for information.

How could using these tools promote learner autonomy?
I want my students to take responsibility to learn up the syllabus contents to improve their grades. They have a variety of activities to learn from. I need to consider the feedback from my students to improve the outlook and the display to make interesting attractive to them. I need more time.I realised that some of the vocabulary may be difficult to them. Students are responsive in giving the ideas in their own language and picking up the new language, English.

What are the constraints that would make it difficult to use these tools, and how will you overcome them?
Firstly, availability of internet access is problematic. The equipment is not working well. I used mobile technology to support the learning in class and mobile-learning is workable.

Week 8

I actually introduced the cIkguwongll.blogspot.com to my students this week to two of the form 5 end classes.
Unfortunately, using one-computer classroom (ETEMS room) was a failure. Some teacher trainees has infected the computer with virus. The other alternative I used in class was to demonstrate how to go to blog using my mobile phone. They were amazed that they said they would try to access the blog at home.

I actually wanted to try out the interactive PowerPoint  with my students but it was unsuccessful due to virus attack.

This week Donna also put up some links for templates, I created some flash cards using British Council free templates
for revising Chapter 3. It is very convenient and easy to select picture from the library and type in whatever information needed. The weakness of using British Council templates is I could only print it and I could not save it for future use.
Therefore, I scanned it and converted it to Jpeg format

I can't wait to share this with my students in class.

Wong Lai Leng

Here are some evidences of what happened in my class.
A student attempted the essay question

Another student tried to write the essay question

Students in groups of two play the flash card game.

Week 7

As I shared last week my students were not doing well in the literature component in writing essay, so last week I created and posted my interactive game-based PowerPoint. Sadly, I cannot test out this technology with the students yet for they are in the midst of sitting for the examination.

This week we are supposed to work on a new technology to help my students. I choose to develop a blog where my students can access and share the information on literature component. Come to think of it, I can share this with other teachers in my school who are teaching this novel.

This is my Blog for teaching the novel Step by Wicked Step(Work-in-progress)
http://cikguwongll.blogspot.com/

For a start, I have put in some information on the blog regarding the novel from general to specific. I could have display all the information I have found on the blog. I plan in a way that students should take responsibilities of their own learning (autonomy learning) and computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL). The students and teachers will learn though discovery method and post whatever they find online as comments.

Later on I will include some links on grammar lessons and vocabulary list for my students to work on their own weak areas..Whoever is interested to comment and join me as a partner.

Some model essay will be given, students have to create on they own essay

Week 6
As I have mentioned Mid Year Examination Week in my school had just began last week, my students from the weak class did not perform very well in their English paper 2. I have finished marking their paper. The last question which carried 15 marks. They left in empty. only five students attempted and they wrote 2-3 sentences,

My approach to introduce the characters in the novel is the literary text The Novel on Step by Wicked Step by Anne Fine. I have used youtube, com to show the storyline from chapter 1 to 7 over a period of 4 months, each week a 35minutes lesson.  I have used the character mind map to differentiate all six major characters and their stories. Students read the text and made a summary  of what they read yet they did not write anything in the story. I am still marking the first class answers.

Currently, I have been teaching 2 classes of form 5 students aged 17, the first class and the last class in the school. There are 28 students in the first class while there are 33 students in the last class.

I have just developed interactive game-based quiz question in order to test and provide immediate feedback to students. At the moment I cannot use this new technology with them as they are still still sitting for other papers. I intend to use it once the semester reopens in June.
WEEK 5
This week was a busy week for me due to serious family problem and I was on duty as a polling officer in one of the polling officer for Malaysia 13th General Election (GE13) or Pilihanraya Umum ke-13 (PRU!3) on 5 May 2013. Therefore, I did not do anything online.

That's me on duty as polling officer

Thses 3 weeks of Mid Year Examination Week began from 3 May till 23 May 2013. On 11 May we just had Excellence Awards for our students.

Week 4 Reading/Writing Skill-Building Websites

Reading/Writing Skill-Building Websites
Participants in this course (Audience), after reviewing at least two different reading and/or writing web sites in terms of use in their classes (Condition), will share comments about the sites, including the target audience, skill(s) enhanced, and an overall recommendation (Behavior) in at least two posts on Nicenet that include the URL for the web pages (Degree).

Students' background
There are about 35-40 students in a class. They are boys and girls of 16-17 years of age.and they  are students in Form 4 and Form 5, They are multiracial students, range from Malay, Chinese , Indians and others. Incidentally, English is not their mother tongue. They only listen, speak, read and write in English during a five 35minutes lesson in a week. Not all of our students can access to internet. Some students get to go online as teacher displays the information using a  laptop and a LCD projector provided by the school. one computer for the whole class. Theft cases and break ins in our local schools are on the rise. We had lost a few laptops, desktops.printers and LCD projectors. Most of them have personal mobile phone or their family members posses one. They all have account.in Facebook.

As for me, the purpose for the reading and writing task must be meaningful and it must go hand in hand. in our teaching of reading and writing skills in local Malaysia context. We always ask our students to read silently a passage of different genre; a story taken from magazine such as Reader's Digest, a local newspaper report or online newspaper, a personal blog from internet, an article, or letters to editor. Students then have to answer 5 wh-questions in complete sentences based on what they have read. The length of the passage is about 350 words.  In response to the the article, students must write a summary on what they read in their own words in about 350 words. A follow-up writing activity such as writing a report, writing a letter of complaint or
a letter of advice based on what they have read,

A suggested technology enhanced activity
Let my students read an article online. They have to go to online dictionary to check on the meanings and pronunciation. They write short answers regarding what they read online. they are required to write a summary based on what they read. Then they write a letter of advice or complaint to express their dissatisfaction over the issue and post in the facebook for everyone to see. It can be group work or individual work in regards to availability of internet access

There is a great need to set boundaries and limits for students and teachers. The teacher needs to monitor and remind them NOT to post anything which are sensitive , violence.unlawful and sexual on the net. They must not belittle or make fun of people online. They must be responsible to make positive remarks.

week 3

As the famous saying goes,"It is better late than never. "
Some of the activities we did in the district camp from 12 to 14 April 2013
A tradition act of putting a baby to sleep in a sarung

A march past command test

A gadget made for the district camp

jungle survival skills making 'roti lilit'or bake a bread under fire

orienteering

Making a gadget for camp site

In another camp at state level from 16-19 April 2013 at Rimba Tamu, Batang Kali, Selagor, Malaysia
That's me

making a floating raft

testing a raft they made in a nearby river

As I had been away for the camp I attended and away from school, I have to catch up with my school work.Sad to say I have been neglecting my study online.
I need to catch up with the task and assignment. As I look at my personal bookmarks on the desktop, I rediscovered this link which is very useful.

http://tewt.org/index.php/research/social-bookmarking
It gives a brief information as to the importance of social bookmarking, examples of tools and resources for social bookmarking, video tutorials on social bookmarking and how to integrate social bookmarking. If students use these tools, they will begin to take charge of their own learning by controlling the information that they access and use. take charge of their own learning by controlling the information that they access and use.

Delicious is one ot the social bookmarking system allows users to share their bookmarks with others and even join groups of people with similar interests. (Bookmarks can also be kept private.) In a school setting it means colleagues can share academic websites easiiy and students can share subject websites. A defining aspect of social bookmarking is that it simplifies how we share information with each other, and makes it easier to retrieve resources. Sadly, it is no longer supported by Yahoo.

Diigo is a great web-based platform for saving, annotating, and sharing bookmarks, students, teachers, departments, and even institutions can collect, share, and publish their online resources. Diigo serves as a research and collaborative tool and also a knowledge-sharing community.

Diigo Educator Accounts  are special premium accounts provided specifically to K-12 & higher-ed educators. Once your Diigo Educator application is approved, your account will be upgraded to have additional features. You can read the About Diigo section on their website for more information on the service

How to get started using a social bookmarking site?
Firstly, open a free account and save your favorite web sites to this account. Then, give them as many "tags" (keywords to organize content) as will be helpful to retrieve these sites in the future easily, you can make notes on them (using key words) and highlight important sections, and you can share them with others. You can also "follow" other people who mark the same kinds. Let 's take charge of our own learning.

My responses to others' blog in Week 2

 My response to Dareen's blog

Week 2: Reflection

Hello again,

It seems that I will develop the habit of disclosing what I feel about and think of my weekly learning outcomes every Sunday. Perhaps, I should make it every Friday. In this way, I would not be running out of time while doing my tasks.

Let me see, what was I introduced to this week?
Websearching activity was informative in the sense that I got to try new search engines other than  GOOGLE, and I was also reminded of some steps done in web searching I used to follow when I was an applied linguistics graduate student.

Regarding the ABCD objectives, I know how much important and essential it is to set an objective for a class. It has never been an easy task to do. But, with time, one becomes practised. It only needs patience and perseverance.

That's all for now.

Best,

Dareen

Dear Dareen,

I was taught the importance of writing objective in planning a lesson, a course or a training. It sets the mood, framework as to who are the learners(Audience), what are the learners going to learn(behavioral), how and when are the learning take place(condition), and lastly evaluate whether the learning has actually taken place(Degree). It is very essential to have clear objectives as in "Clear objectives can help the instructor design lessons that will be easier for the student to comprehend and the teacher to evaluate".(JoneS, 1997)

It required a thorough thinking process to anticipate.predict and expect the end result of learning and wisdom to choose appropriate stimulus and teaching strategy

My response to Gulnar's blog

MY IMPRESSIONS OF WEEK 2

I am going to share my impressions of Week 2 - how successfully I applied what I learned in my classes - and my opinions with you!

There were a number of valuable activities that we did during this week. First of all, the discussion topic was Websearching. I confess that I was familiar with a few websites like Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia, I always search for the topics on these websites. But thanks to www. noodletools.com - the search engine that Ms Donna offered us, I found many websites useful for my students and me too. As I mentioned in my post there is a great choice of websites that we need time to browse them thoroughly. I will recommend them to my students as well as my colleagues in the university. I hope they will also enjoy them. The websites such as Intute which provides lots of information in all spheres - medicine, art, education, psychology, communication, etc., Bing and iSEEK Education- will be beneficial for students in preparing their reports, Ask.com - we can find the answers to any questions that interest us, Merriam-Webster Dictionary which will enable the students get the definitions of the words, their synonyms, etymology and do quizzes to test themselves. I also took into account some websites that my colleagues recommended me - eric.edu.gov, sweetsearch.com.

Besides our dear instructor informed us with amazing statistics about the Internet users. We must acknowledge that nowadays the number of Internet users is growing exponentially. More than half of the world population have access to the Internet. As the technology becomes a tool for learning, we should benefit its power and go far in our life.

Another important task was to present our ABCD learning objective. We had to share a behavioral objective for the class we are teaching using this model. And I created my learning objective following the criteria suggested by it. It was really interesting. Without objective you can't get success in your teaching career.

And the last we had to describe our classes and inform about the class setting in detail in order to let them know whether we could apply the new technology during our classes. This is the start for our final project.

Every week I learn new things, new technologies that I really didn't expect to be like that!
Thank you so much for giving us opportunities to benefit from your experience!

Sincerely,
Gulnar

  1. Dear Gulnar,
At first, I have tried using web search like Google, YAHOO,WIKIPEDIA, to look for lists of directory and moving on to look for the specified information.

To make power point presentation more interesting, I have included some pictures images in gif and jpeg format and integrated some sounds, videos as pictures speak louder than words. I began to use Yahoo and Google image search and youtube.com. I am aware of copy rights issue, so I make it a point to mention and quote the original source

For my students,I have recommended search engine like dictionary, com and and world web dictionary and thesaurus to build up vocabulary. Fun games website to enrich spelling and vocabulary website like hangman, text twists, word search, spelling bee,

I actually like noodle.com. It makes my websearching faster and simpler.Thank you,Donna.

Profiling My Audience

This is my personal example of the ABCD model of writing objectives.

The four students aged 16 years old were selected for the Parliamentary style debate at zone level in a preliminary round. They were very proficient speaker. They are able to speak in English fluently. However, English is not their mother tongue. They do not read widely.unfortunately, the time given to prepare for the debate was too short.

In order to prepare for the speech for 8 minutes, students were asked to bring their mobile phone, netbook or laptop. They brainstormed and outlined the points for the motion 'Science is a threat to mankind'. They were not informed of the role they were going to play until the competition day. So they had to write both sides of  the speech, the Government and the Opposition. They did not have enough time to role-play the debate with their friends,

My students actually went to research at the http://idebate.org portal for reference and preparation for their speech.http://idebate.org/debatabase/debates/science-technology/science/house-believes-science-threat-humanityMy students made use of online dictionary such as http://www.merriam-webster.com/ ; http://dictionary.cambridge.org/ and other sites  to look for definitions of words which were applicable for the motion. to  prove their points. They actually used google search to look for relevant examples and cites incidences. My students took part in our local parliamentary style debate at zone level.

It was their first time taking part in a debate. They did not win. One of the debaters actually broke down and cried during her turn to speak.

 My other observation

My personal observation on the role of a facilitator

I read a few blogs, I notice that Donna is very encouraging and she provides scaffolding to participants in the course, including myself.
As I use google search to find out more about scaffolding , this is what I have discovered.
Rebecca Alber mentioned the following in her blog
"Scaffolding is breaking up the learning into chunks and then providing a tool, or structure, with each chunk" and .
scaffolding is likened to what you do first with kids, then for those students who are still struggling, you may need to differentiate by modifying an assignment and/or making accommodations for a student

She mentioned there are six strategies in using scaffolding in teaching. I could see that Donna and perhaps we should apply these strategies in using technology to teach.

#1. Show and Tell

Donna using nicenet and wikis roll, reading assignment, to show and tell what we should do

#2. Tap into Prior Knowledge

#3. Give Time to Talk

She will show us  and give us time to respond to the task. She provides us with clear instruction promptly so that we will not feel lost in whatever we are doing.

#4. Pre-Teach Vocabulary

The reading text and materials are useful to prepare us for the basic knowledge  from known to unkwown.

#5. Use Visual Aids

She will provide me with clear example what to do next.

#6. Pause, Ask Questions, Pause, Review

I like the grading system to know when we stand in the process of learning and the feedback and the personal timely reminder when we stray away.Well done, Donna,

Task 2

The profile of my audience in writng ABCD model objectives

The following task I gave to the members of English Language Society(Audience) on April 4, 2013. The background of the students are they are learning English as second language and they do not have opportunity to learn English in a meaningful content.

.

They have to work together to come out with a story board to tell a story (Behavioural) as behavioural objective and the final outcome. They will be rewarded with pizza voucher if they succeed in creating the story. Eating pizza is their external motivation and rewards of the hardwork they put in.(condition). Time line is about 6 weeks.

To write the storyline, they have to search words to describe the people and events where online dictionary (technology tool-using mobile phones) will provide them the support(condition)..

The final product is a complete story board or video production (Degree)

Week 2

In week 2, I have to work on the following.
Week 2: Discussion –Web searching-contributr to a discussion and post 2 replies
Week 2: Task – ABCD Learning Objectives”
http://ets.tlt.psu.edu/learningdesign/objectives/writingobjectives/
Week 2: Project Task –Describe a Class.” Think about a class that would benefit from using a new technology tool. This can be the same class that you described in the Weekly Task or a different class. Describe your students and class setting. Make sure you discuss the technology you and your students have access to now, both in and outside of school. This first project task is worth 10 point

My discussion on web searching
Well, I am one of those who depend heavily on search engine like Google search/ yahoo search or other search engines to look for relevant and reliable information as the directory were listed. I actually encouraged my  students and colleague to do likewise. I have used scholar.google.com.to look for articles and legal documents for research academic references.

As I had to do some reading on websearching, I am enlightened that there are many sites that I can go to for different types of information. It makes the task of websearching simple and easy. a special thank you for those who have developed informative information.

Like some of the coursemates, I have tried the thesarus.com and a few online dictionary to pick up the meaning of words.

...to be continued

WEEK 1 My reflection on Blogging  on 7 April 2013
Blogging actually is very interesting and informative.

For the person who creates the blog, it has many benefits. It keeps record of the learning process. It helps us to reflect, evaluate on what had taken place so that steps can be taken to improve the current situation.

Blogs has many interesting features which allows sharing information, ideas, video and websites.
We are allowed to post comments in each other blogs.

However,we need to be responsible in what we post in the blog, just as Donna encourages positive active participation and we must abide the rules and regulation when we go online.

Happy blogging, everyone!

I have tried this blogging with my secondary students in my school but the results is not encouraging.

However, in tertiary education purposes,I know it works. For adult learners in the course I took I witnessed all my course mates participated actively in Blogging. Maybe it is related to Maslow's theory of Intrinsic Motivation. Adult learners wanted to achieve their ultimate purpose of studying in pursuing the degree and complete the course, so they will do it
A thought to ponder...

My response to Blog Comment on Marina's blog

Week 1 Reflection

Hello everyone!
The course is well-composed. There are a lot of useful materials on the course website, but unfortunately I haven’t enough time to study all materials carefully. It’s unusual for me to study on-line. I thought that it’s easier than face-to-face learning, but I was mistaken. It is very difficult to manage your time and to explain my family that I need evening time for learning. I have some problems with making my blog – Internet Explore interrupted the connection every time when I tried to write my post. But I was happy to  all my small victories: participating in class discussions and making my own blog. Thank you very much for clear instructions.

1 comment:

This is my first time learning on line 100 per cent. It is very interesting for me as this is a kind of refreshing course what I did earlier during my master programme in 2006.

I could still recall at that time that broadband service was not widely available such as now. We felt frustrated. This is because whenever and whatever we typed, we tried to post online disappeared due to the error in internet connection.Well. I am reminded, Prof Raja Maznah (University of Malaya) once said, "we need to plan for alternative just in case technology fails us."

Topic 2 Discussion

 My participation in discussions

I tend to agree to Pape et all (2005) that blogging and reflecting on what I did online course enable me" to introspectively analyze what I am teaching, why I teach the way I do and how can I change and improve my communication with the students.”

This is my desire to learn as I participate in this online course.
